Annual Supporter Reception
Save the date: Annual Supporter Reception
Each year we host a supporter reception to thank alumni, friends and partners for their ongoing commitment to helping us provide an education without boundaries to Greenwich students. This encompasses all who are included in the annual Supporter Roll who have contributed gifts of time and money across the year, as well as those who have been recognised by the community with an Alumni Award. Here we will unveil the new Greenwich Portraits, announce the winners of the 2023 Alumni Awards and hear from some of the students who have been positively impacted by this work.
We would be delighted if you could save the date for the Annual Supporter Reception, in Lower Deck, Dreadnought Building on Tuesday 30 January 2024. Formal invitations and further details to be shared shortly.
Recognising our supporters
Throughout the year, many alumni donate and give their time and expertise to support the University of Greenwich and our students. Do you know of alumni who have contributed to the university? Please submit your nominations for the Alumni Awards using this form.
Annual Supporter Reception 2022
Last year's supporter reception involved a special collaboration with the launch of the school of stage and screen.
The launch showcased performances and works created by our academics including an interactive performance by ZU-UK and an ambisonic sound installation by composers, artists, and researchers from the SOUND/IMAGE Research Centre (pictured). We also showcased student work that had already received external recognition and acclaim, including excerpts from Bathway Theatre Company’s third Edinburgh Festival Fringe production Woyzeck Marie, and a showreel featuring films produced by current students in our Film and Television Masters programme.
Finally, we were delighted to showcase the inaugural Alumni Awards, where we recognise outstanding members of the University of Greenwich community.
Bukola Bakinson Star of the Future Award
Bukola’s (BA Film & Television Production, 2021) film ‘No Comprendo’ has won various awards on the festival circuit this year. It is a documentary film that asks whether Britain’s criminal justice system works in today’s 21st century multicultural society and featured in the Sanctuary in Education event at the university.
Bukola is a recent graduate and 2022 Greenwich Portrait, her work in film is making significant waves and we are excited to see her continued success.
Keith Tomlins Positive Impact Award
Greenwich alumni and staff, Keith (PhD Natural Resources, 2010) takes a special place in the community having been a regular donor to the Greenwich Student Fund for over ten years. A longstanding contribution like this reflects a commitment to ensuring students can access higher education regardless of background or circumstance which helps us to provide an education without boundaries for our students.
Meike Imberg Alumni Inclusivity Award
Meike (BSc Sociology and Psychology, 2017) was President of Greenwich Students’ Union during her studies and is a longstanding supporter of the university often returning to give her time and expertise to university initiatives and events, most recently the Alumni LGBT+ Community. Her dedication to inclusivity inspires our students with her Greenwich Portrait which is on display in the foyer of Stockwell Street Library.
Ian Turner Mentor of the Year Award
Ian (BA Philosophy and Mathematics, 2007) has stayed close to his roots at the university and wanted to give something back. He is currently Head of Partner Solutions at Google and has worked closely with Greenwich Business School to involve Google in the Careers Mentoring programme which successfully runs on the Ask Alumni+ platform. So far over 50 Greenwich students have benefited from 1:1 relationships with high quality mentors from Google.
A member of staff working on the programme has said: “His enthusiasm and passion for giving back is infectious and he has been both a mentor and mentor programme leader. To top it all, we were very honoured when he agreed to be our keynote speaker at the Mentoring Achievement Ceremony in June. We owe him a big debt of gratitude for everything he does, especially as our partnership is on a solid footing for even bigger things!”
Byron Cole* Alumni Collaboration Award
Last summer, Byron (BSc Economics, 2008) received an Honorary Degree in recognition of his business acumen and outstanding work for both entrepreneurship and philanthropy. Since completing his studies with the university, he has returned to share his business expertise with the Generator volunteering as a judge on the panel for the Enterprise awards, supported students through mentoring, donated to the Covid-19 Student Appeal, and as a speaker at countless events.
Byron is also a Greenwich Portrait and in 2019, was involved in the GSU Black Excellence Portraits edition. Byron is always happy to help and come up with ways of supporting students to achieve and exceed expectations.
*Byron was unable to make the ceremony so Roneish Myers accepted the award on his behalf.
Punchdrunk Partner of the Year
A partnership that has been in development since 2019 reached its full potential this year in a unique collaboration that provided students from Drama and Design with placement opportunities working on the creation of an original London show by internationally renowned theatre company Punchdrunk. With the company making a home within Woolwich Works – the borough’s brand new multi-million-pound cultural quarter in the heart of Woolwich – this partnership connects students from the university with creative arts leaders to provide quality experiential learning that is embedded within curriculum design, and developed in collaboration with industry. As the company’s newest production reached the building and installation phase of the project, 2nd year students from the BA Drama programme and MA Design programme provided key support to transform two disused warehouse spaces into an immersive experience
