Community matters
Alumni communities create tailored spaces for mentorship, professional development, and advocacy while strengthening Greenwich's commitment to inclusive excellence. Through these focused networks, alumni can collaborate on initiatives that matter most to them, enriching both their own post-university journey and the broader Greenwich community.
Global Majority Alumni Community launch
The Global Majority Alumni Community (GMAC) formally launched at the university in September 2024 during a poignant celebration marking what would have been Stephen Lawrence's 50th birthday.
This evening featured Michelle Gayle, an honorary graduate and co-founder of The World Reimagined, along with exhibitions presented by the Black Heroes Foundation and Culture&.
Guests also saw a special screening of 'Our Kid from the North and the South of the M1 River', an autobiographical animation about Professor Louise Owusu-Kwarteng.

The Story of Flip Fraser
25 October 2024, The Shaw Theatre
This year is 10 years since we lost Flip Fraser, on 31 August 2014. We are commemorating his memory with a theatrical event and evening of entertainment at The Shaw Theatre, Euston, London. This event is being held on his birthday 25 October, during Black History Month. The Shaw Theatre is where Flip launched ‘Black Heroes in the Hall of Fame’ in 1987. It is a great honour to return to this theatre to celebrate his memory and legacy.
The Story of Flip Fraser: A Windrush Story.
A Jamaican boy fights the struggles of the Windrush era, and with his lifelong mission, gives a Voice to Black Youth launching the Voice newspaper at the 1982 Notting Hill Carnival, and taking his iconic musical show ‘Black Heroes in Hall of Fame – 5,000 years of Black History in one night of theatre’ around the UK, the United States and to the Caribbean.
This production is a musical extravaganza, which tells the story of creative activist and Windrusher, Peter Randolph Fraser aka Flip Fraser, the first editor of the Voice Newspaper, and creator of the theatre production Black Heroes in the Hall of Fame. It chronicles his childhood in Jamaica, arrival in the UK, creative and community work in London; together with his impact on the Black community.
RUN screening
29 October 2024, Greenwich Picturehouse
We also collaborated with Roneish Myers, co-producer of RUN, to invite staff and students to a special film screening.
RUN stars CJ Bekford and Maisie Richardson-Sellers. The film follows JB, a writer grappling with the emotional aftermath of a toxic relationship, creative paralysis, and unexpected connections. It offers a raw and honest portrayal of healing, personal growth, and the redemptive power of human connection.

A sustainability community for our alumni
The University of Greenwich inaugurated its Sustainability Alumni Community in July 2024, marked by an engaging panel discussion at the Stockwell Street Building. Environmental leaders, including Bryan Magar from the Environment Agency and RSK Group consultants, shared expertise on achieving Net Zero by 2030.
The community now offers both digital and in-person collaboration opportunities, recently demonstrated through a webinar exploring alumni's role in addressing sustainability challenges. Members connect to share expertise, develop projects and support Greenwich's environmental initiatives.
